Q1. To automate my home, is it necessary to have special wiring installed throughout my house?A1. To control line voltage items like lights, it is not necessary to install any special wiring. We use what is known as power line carrier (PLC) technology to control a home. PLC technology works by communicating on the conventional power wire that is in all homes. For low voltage items like door and window openers, irrigation, and HVAC control, some additional low voltage wiring will be needed.
Q2. I am presently constructing a new home. I would like to have some of the systems you provide, but can not afford them at this time. Should I do anything now, to prep for the future installation of these systems?
A2. Yes! If you are only interested in lighting control, the most important thing to do now, is to have the light switches wired so that the power wire feeds through the switch box before it terminates at the light fixture. Doing this provides a neutral wire at the switch, that is needed for most "Smart House" switches.
Q3. What if I want some of the other systems installed?
A3. The following are our recommendations when pre-installing for the respective systems:
Telephone: use category 5 wiring at all phone locations and have uninterrupted home runs all the way to the equipment room.
Video Distribution: Have two RG-6 coaxial cables installed at any location where a television may potentially be placed. These should also be home runs to the equipment room.
Computer Network: use category 5 wiring to all locations and have uninterrupted home runs all the way to the equipment room.
Video Monitoring: Have one RG-6 coaxial cable, and one cat 5 cable installed at any location where a television camera may potentially be placed (front entrance, babies room, swimming pool, etc.). These must be home runs to the equipment room.
